Government Museum, is one of the most famous sightseeing in Chennai(Madras).
Government Museum, which lies in the heart of Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu is situated in Egmore and is built over an area of 16.25 acres. The museum has six buildings and 46 galleries.
The main building of Government Museum in Chennai has five different sections.
Archaeology
Zoology
Botany
Geology
Numismatics
The Archaeological section has two separate galleries showing sculptures of both North and South India. You will also get a detailed information about Indus Valley Civilization as one entire gallery is devoted to this civilization. There are separate galleries for Hindu and Jain Sculptures. One gallery in this archaeological sections will throw light on the Amravati sculpture whereas another gallery is named as Memorial Stones and Hero Stones.
The Zoology section has nine galleries, each will give you vital information about general zoology, reptiles, birds, fishes, mammals, corals, invertebrates, foreign animals and also flight in animal kingdom.

The Botany section has Systematic and Economic Botany gallery whereas Geology section has general and economy gallery. You can also visit philately gallery in the Numismatics sections.
The front building has the archaeological and anthropology sections. In the anthropology section you can increase your knowledge on pre-historical times, ethnology, physical anthropology, arms, musical instruments, puppets and folk art. The two galleries in the archaeological section throw light on the industrial art and wood carvings.
The Government Museum has a section where you can find different bronze items. You can also get a detailed account of numismatics and chemical conservation here.

The Government Museum is opened on all days from 9.30am to 5pm except on Fridays and national holidays.
