Sun TV is one of the most viewed regional Tamil language cable channel of Chennai. It is the major channel of Chennai-based Rs. 16000 crore Sun Network. Sun TV has the reputation of being the first privately owned Tamil channel in India when it came forth in 1992. Its soaps and serials have brought forth the maximum TRP rating for viewership in India, thus making it the most famous channel in India.
The service of Sun TV is broadcast through satellite or cable networks all over India. Sun TV can be viewed in the United States, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Oman, Kenya, Japan, New Zealand, Korea, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Malaysia, South Africa, the Asia Pacific region, Singapore and in some parts of Europe. Some of the popular programs of Sun TV are like Selvi and Arasi.
Sun TV was the largest political-media family in India till the split in November 2005. DMK president M Karunanidhi announced on the 7th of November, 2005, that his wife Dayalu Ammal has gave up her 20% shares in Sun Network and its Tamil publications.

The serials broadcasted by Sun TV were viewed by millions of people (especially in south India). The serials present the story of communities and families going through misery thrust upon by the shrewd in-laws, manipulative workers and evil landlords. Most of these serials start with an introductory song which lasts for about five minutes and the same song again at the close of the serial. Viewers get to enjoy almost 12 minutes of drama and in between that 8 minutes of commercials are presented. Some of the widely viewed serials on Sun TV are Alli Raajiyam, Anjali, Adhu Mattum Ragasiyam, Chidambara Rahasiyam, Imsai Arasigal, Kolangal, and various other serials.
Thus, Sun TV is the most viewed channel in Chennai which also airs numerous musical programs on the weekends. These programs give an opportunity to the local people to exhibit their singing, disco dancing and a number of other talents to millions of audience.
