The New Indian Express has its head office in Chennai, India. It started as the Indian Express in 1932 and owned by Chennai-based Veradharajulu Naidu. The death of the then owner of this newspaper, Ramnath Goenka in 1999, his family was divided and gave rise to two separate companies. The edition of north retained the name, Indian Express while the southern edition became The New Indian Express.
The New Indian Express is published from the major the major cities of Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu. The Cities are Coimbatore, Bangalore, Chennai, Kochi and Hyderabad. It also brings an edition in Orissa. There are, in all, 14 publishing centers in the south. The New Indian Express also publishes a city supplement called, City Express which provides news of each city. Other supplements published on fortnightly or weekly basis are youth, pull-outs on careers, education and women.

Total circulation of The New Indian Express is about 24% of the entire population of India. According to National Readership Survey in India for the year 2006, The New Indian Express is the 6th biggest English daily in India as far as readership is concerned.
The New Sunday Express which is the Sunday edition of the The New Indian Express, edited by Sushila Ravindranath, is the main publication, with magazine supplements comprising both national and international reports and sections on arts, travel, leisure, lifestyle, new age living, sport, books, entertainment, self-development and development issues.
The New Indian Express is now renowned for articles by S. Gurumurthy and T. J. S. George and it is managed by Manoj Kumar Sonthalia, from Chennai. Editorial advisor and journalist of the New Indian Express T. J. S. George won the esteemed C. H. Mohammad Koya Journalism Award in 2005 for his spectacular contribution to the field.
