The Hindu is one of the most read English newspapers in Chennai. It has the largest base for circulation in the state of Tamil Nadu. The publication of this newspaper started on 1878. The Hindu was established on the principle of truthfulness and justice. It is headquartered in Chennai. This newspaper was published on a weekly basis when it was launched in 1878 and it started its daily publication in 1889.
The Hindu has the reputation of being the first newspaper in India to provide an online edition in 1995. The Hindu is published from 12 different positions – Chennai, Delhi, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Madurai, Thiruvananthapuram, Vijayawada, Kochi, Mangalore, Tiruchirapalli and Visakhapatnam.
The exact date of publication of the first issue of The Hindu was on 20th September, 1878, by six young and energetic men under the leadership of G. Subramania Aiyer. Mr. Aiyer was a social reformer and a school teacher from Thiruvaiyyar. At the age of 23, he along with his twenty one year old friend at pachaiyappa’s College, M. Veeraraghavachariar and four law students, T.T. Rangachariar, D. Kesava Rao Pant P.V. Rangachariar and N. Subba Rao Pantulu were the members of Triplicane Literary Society. “The Triplicane Six” started The Hindu by borrowing one rupee and twelve annas to counter the autocratic nature of English language press. Thus, The Hindu started its publication with Aiyer as the editor and Veeraraghavachariar as the managing director.

The change of ownership of The Hindu also saw a change in the political inclination in the later half of 1980. N. Ram became the editor-in-chief of this newspaper in 27th June, 2003 with a mandate to upgrade the mechanism and structure of the newspaper.
The Hindu is a family-run publishing house in India. It was led by G. Kasturi from 1965-1991, N. Ravi from 1991-2003, and by his brother, N. Ram from June 27th 2003 till date. Other family members, including Nirmala Lakshman, Nalini Krishnan, Malini Parthasarathy, N Murali, K Venugopal, K Balaji and Ramesh Rangarajan are directors of The Hindu and its parent company, Kasturi and Sons. S Rangarajan, the previous chairman and managing director of The Hindu since April 2006, died on 8 February 2007.
