Theaters in Chennai (Madras) was started in the end of 19th century. Sagunvilas Sabha in 1891 began non-professional drama in Chennai. Tamil theater was further developed by Sambandh Mudaliya who translated many international plays in vernacular. He wrote almost 40 plays. He is regraded as the best playwrights of Tamil Theaters. The modern Tamil theater was started by Shankardas Swamigal. His dramas had mainly historical and mythological characters.
After the development of modern drams the city boasted Tamil movies. Tamil movies played a very important role in the culture and art of the city. The modern Tamil movies was started in 1950s.
